What is a safety sensor?

Safety sensors are components used to monitor hazardous areas and protective devices on machines and systems in order to protect people from injury and systems from damage. Non-contact coded safety switches are designed for use on safety doors, sliding safety guards, or protective covers, as found in numerous applications, e.g., on machine tools or on flaps in the food industry. Opening the door automatically triggers the safe shutdown of the system, or as soon as a hazard is detected (e.g., a hand enters a running press). The sensor immediately sends a signal to the safety controller, which puts the machine into a safe state.

What are features of safety sensors?

All safety switches in the ZCode series operate without contact, with a high switching distance and high tolerance for misalignment of the safety door. The switching status is indicated by an LED.

The main advantages over mechanical safety switches are their simple installation, small design, and high resistance to contamination and moisture. They also operate wear-free, thus minimizing maintenance costs.

ZANDER safety switches are characterized by their high tamper resistance. They are TÜV type-tested and can be used up to the highest safety level PL e.

The difference between the switches lies in the various housing designs. Some ZCodes have a stainless steel housing for increased temperature requirements or when high chemical resistance to environmental influences is required. Thanks to permanent self-monitoring, the system switches itself off in the event of an internal defect.

What are the areas of application for safety sensors?

  • Mechanical engineering & machine tools: Securing hinged or sliding protective covers and maintenance doors to prevent access during ongoing processes.
  • Food & beverage industry: Ideal for filling systems, cutting machines, or packaging systems that are frequently cleaned with high-pressure cleaners thanks to their hygienic design and stainless steel option (ZCode E).
  • Packaging technology: Monitoring of feeders and flaps on cartoners or palletizers, where vibrations and slight misalignment of the doors are common.
  • Chemical & pharmaceutical industry: Use in environments with high requirements for chemical resistance to cleaning agents and aggressive environmental influences.
  • Automated production lines: Protection of robot cells and assembly areas where a compact design is crucial for integration into narrow profiles.
