Coded Safety Switches

What is a coded safety switch?

A coded safety switch is a device used to monitor the status of movable protective devices (such as doors, hoods, or flaps). What makes it special compared to mechanical switches is its coding. The switch only responds to a specific, associated counterpart (the actuator). This prevents the safety function from being easily manipulated or bypassed using standard tools, magnets, or replacement actuators.

What are the functions and features of coded safety switches?

  • High tamper protection: Individual coding prevents the safety function from being circumvented using simple tools.
  • Wear-free operation: Contactless detection means there is no mechanical wear, which extends the service life even with frequent operation.
  • Tolerance for door misalignment: Since no mechanical key needs to be inserted, the switches function reliably even with vibrations or slight misalignment of the door.
  • Efficient installation: Modern variants enable space-saving installation and can often be connected in series without reducing the safety level (PL e).

What are the areas of application for coded safety switches?

  • Packaging machines: Securing doors with a high opening frequency.
  • Robot cells: Ensuring immediate system shutdown when the danger zone is entered.
  • Vibration-intensive systems: Prevention of false triggering due to vibrations.
  • General mechanical engineering: Wherever compact designs and international safety standards (e.g., EN ISO 13849-1) must be met.

An important advantage as compared to mechanical safety relays is easy assembly, compact design and high degree of safety against contamination and moisture. Besides, they are wear-resistant, which reduces the maintenance cost.

ZANDER safety switches feature high degree of manipulation safety. They are TÜV type tested and can be used up to the highest safety level PL e.

The safety relays are completely dust- and waterproof (IP 67/69K). The difference lies in different housing variants. The ZCode (E)-series (see section Coded Stainless Steel Safety Switches) has a stainless steel housing for high temperature requirements or for high chemical resistance to environmental influences.

Moreover, due to the higher hygiene requirements, they are predestined for use in the food (packaging) industry!
