What is a safety relay?

A safety relay monitors safety-related signals and ensures safe shutdown in the event of danger to protect people and machines. They monitor the function of connected safety sensors and wiring and act as power amplifiers to safely switch off connected contactors or drives. They are designed to detect malfunctions in devices, sensors, or actuators and, if necessary, to initiate the safe shutdown of machines or systems. The safety relay module detects the input of the safety signal, simultaneously checks the activation of the start switch in the control system, and then sends a signal to the contactor to start motor operation.

What are the areas of application for safety relays?

Safety relays are primarily used to monitor safety functions in the following areas, for example:

  • Metalworking: The relay ensures that the press only starts when the worker has both hands on the buttons and cannot reach under the tool.
  • Food industry: If someone opens the safety door on the packaging machine, the safety relay immediately switches off the motor so that no one is injured.
  • Logistics & warehousing: As soon as someone pulls the emergency stop cord on a long conveyor belt, the relay stops the belt immediately to prevent accidents.
  • Firing systems: The device monitors the gas burner in continuous operation and immediately shuts off the gas if a fault occurs in the line or at the flame.
